Tableau 3D minimaliste noir et blanc ODECO au-dessus d’un meuble

What size painting should I choose to hang above a sofa?

Quick answer: The total width of the artwork or composition should generally be about 60-75% of the sofa's width. Then, leave approximately 15 to 25 cm between the backrest and the bottom of the artwork.

Start by measuring the sofa

Measure the actual width of the sofa, without relying solely on whether it's called a two-seater or three-seater. Multiply this width by 0.60 and by 0.75 to get a balanced proportion range.

Sofa width Recommended total width
160 cm 96 to 120 cm
200 cm 120 to 150 cm
230 cm 138 to 173 cm

These measurements serve as a starting point. Ceiling height, wall width, and adjacent furniture can alter the result.

Large artwork, duo, or trio?

A single large decorative artwork creates a clear focal point and works well in modern living rooms. A duo adds more rhythm, while a trio can dress up a long wall. In all cases, calculate the total width, including spaces. Between two frames, generally allow 5 to 10 cm.

At what height should the artwork be hung?

Above the sofa, the connection to the furniture is more important than a standard height measured from the floor. Place the bottom of the artwork approximately 15 to 25 cm above the backrest. If it's too high, it will seem disconnected from the living room; too low, it can bother people sitting down.

The most common mistakes

  • Choosing a small, isolated frame on a very large wall.
  • Hanging the artwork too close to the ceiling.
  • Forgetting to include the spaces between frames.
  • Choosing a format before measuring the sofa.
