Grand vase en terre cuite beige Cordage ODECO posé sur un buffet

How to decorate a dining room buffet

To decorate a sideboard, start with a focal point on the wall, then arrange two or three groups of objects of different heights. Always leave part of the furniture free to avoid a cluttered look.

Choosing the focal point

A decorative painting adds color and character, while a mirror reflects light and visually enlarges the dining room. Its width must remain proportionate to the sideboard and not appear to extend beyond the furniture.

Using the rule of three heights

Compose a group with a tall item, a medium item, and a small accent. For example:

  • a large vase;
  • an intermediate height candlestick;
  • a small figurine or a candle on a book.

The three objects do not need to be touching. A little space between them allows their shapes to be better distinguished.

Creating a symmetrical or asymmetrical composition

Symmetry, with two candlesticks or two similar objects, gives a classic and orderly result. An asymmetrical composition appears more modern: place a large vase on one side and a lower group on the other.

Grouping small objects

A decorative tray helps organize candles and small accessories. It creates a visual boundary and makes it easy to move the composition when you use the sideboard.

Adding a warm atmosphere

Choose candles compatible with their holders and keep flames away from dried flowers, textiles, and flammable objects. Slightly vary the heights without blocking the painting or mirror.

The final check

Step back a few paces and look at the whole from the table. If all the objects are the same height or if the surface seems full, remove an item. Consult our dining room decoration guide to complete the room.
